CBSPD CSPDT Certification Vs CRCST

CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) and CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) are two prominent certifications in the field of sterile processing. Both are highly respected, but they differ in their eligibility requirements, issuing organizations, and focus. Here's a breakdown of the facts and a perspective on why CSPDT might be a better fit for some individuals, especially those looking for a more accessible path to certification.

CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician):

  • Exam Structure: 150 multiple-choice questions (125 scored and 25 unscored) to be completed in 3 hours.
  • Required Practical Experience: At least one year of full-time employment in sterile processing, OR completion of a sterile processing technician training course with a passing grade of 70 or higher, OR other qualifying experience as specified by CBSPD.
  • Certificate Validity: 5 years.
  • Focus Areas: Roles and Responsibilities, Life Science, Decontamination and Disinfection, Preparation and Handling, Sterilization, Sterile Storage, Inventory Management, and Distribution, Patient Care Equipment, and Ethics.

CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician):

  • Exam Structure: 150 multiple-choice questions (125 scored and 25 unscored) to be completed in 3 hours (correct).
  • Required Practical Experience: 400 hours of hands-on experience, which can be completed within 6 months of passing the exam if choosing provisional certification.
  • Certificate Validity: the CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certification is not valid for 5 years. It must be renewed annually, requiring 12 continuing education credits each year to maintain compliance.
  • Focus Areas: Cleaning, Decontamination, Disinfection, Preparation, Packaging, Sterilization, and Documentation.

Both certifications are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Why CSPDT Might Be the Better Choice

The CSPDT certification stands out for its openness and flexibility in helping individuals become eligible to sit for the exam. Unlike the CRCST, which requires 400 hours of hands-on experience, the CSPDT allows candidates to qualify with either one year of full-time experience or completion of a sterile processing program. This makes it a more accessible option for those who may not yet have extensive hands-on experience but have completed relevant training.

Additionally, the CBSPD (the organization behind CSPDT) is known for its supportive approach to certification. They provide clear guidelines and resources to help candidates prepare, making the process less daunting for newcomers to the field.
